Students Visit YWAM
It's been an honour to walk with groups of students as they visit the YWAM base. Youth with a mission have their national base in Harpenden. After many conversations with schools we realised that the team up at the Oval have so many fantastic stories to share and experiences which the teachers could teach about in case studies but nothing compares to talking to people in person.
The students arrived at the base in their GCSE Class group, were taken on a tour of the base, introduced to YWAM and what they stand for and then sat with a missionary from the base and talked to them. Each student had prepared a question to ask.
One group I sat with this week asked some fantastic questions;
What experience made you believe in God?
Why did you decide to be a missionary?
Have you experienced persecution?
Why do you believe in God?
Overall my reflection on sessions that have run this week is that it is a privilege to introduce the students to individuals who have decided to serve God as a missionary. From their stories and the way they share you can hear in their words a passion and an enthusiasm that could never be conveyed in a case study.
The hope of the visit for the school is that it is a memorable experience for them, giving them stories to apply Christian Beliefs and Practices to for their exams as well as enabling them to for a moment see life from the perspective of a person of faith. These two things raise empathy and understanding for the students in a great way.
For Step the hope is also twofold, that students would get to meet other people of faith in addition to the Step team they already know as well as hear the message that missionaries share with those that ask.
We are grateful to have had this opportunity to spend time taking 5 GCSE classes from 2 schools in Harpenden on this YWAM visit and look forward to enabling more groups to experience this in the coming years.
