Which Path Will You Choose?
Through interactive and stimulating sessions Year 8 at St George's had the opportunity to consider how positive relationships are begun by seeing intrinsic value in the other and with their good in mind, speaking, acting and encouraging the best out of every individual.
Our 14 strong team delivered our Prejudice lesson followed by the Price is Right workshop. The Prejudice session takes the students on a journey exploring how thoughts become actions. Imagining they have escaped a sinking ship, students have control of a life raft and space to help others around them. Who will they choose to save? The 7 people they could choose between have a range of characteristics which intentionally draw out prejudices in the gathered group.
In The Price is Right session, the students explored the value we place on others reflecting on their choices in the first session and linking this to the way that we act and speak towards each other. We share something of the perspective we believe God communicates through the bible and the life of Jesus, that the young people have intrinsic worth because of their creator.
After break we hosted a lively and energetic games session, run by Mike Palin from 267. They gave the students space to let off steam and at the same time see the relevance of the topic of the day to all aspects of life, even in team game decisions.
The prefects joined us to deliver the last two sessions of the day providing a new language for the way ahead. Through the sessions students were becoming aware of their friendship language and were challenged that we teach people how to treat us. In the second session they challenged their default reaction in a range of circumstances and gave space for them to consider what may be a better response to the situation. We used animals to illustrate the reactions- a bull, ostrich, ant, koala, meerkat and bombardier beetle.
The day was weighty however, seasoned with moments of laughter, humour and empathy, the sessions landed very well with the students. To bring together the threads of the day I was lead to this thought, which formed the conclusion of the day.
“Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.”
Matthew 7:13-14 ESV
If choosing to say that comment to a friend that you know is really to make the people around you laugh, or deciding to act on a prejudice which leads to discrimination, or acting like a bull when responding like a meerkat would have been more loving are examples of the wide way. Jesus invited us to see there is another way, he calls it the narrow way, it is not easy and few find it. This narrow way leads to life, love, kindness and so much more. Jesus' life shone a torch light on the narrow way, inviting us to follow him.
The school team, our team and the students had a fantastic day. It was an honour to explore this theme with them. Can’t wait to see them again soon,
Charlotte.
