When you see a volunteer ace it!
Some of you will be aware that it is national volunteers’ week this coming week; a celebration of wonderful people who give their time and talents! In our last article we celebrated the breadth of having a wonderful team of volunteers, now lets look at the depth!
I’ve had the pleasure of delivering our Fairtrade lessons in Katherine Warington School, taking place over the last 3 weeks. During this time, my definite highlight has been to see our team member Joel step up and take the lead in several of these lessons.
Last week Joel introduced the lesson and helped the students to engage in the frenetic trainer production activity, he wrapped up the session with a reflective and interactive talk which would have made most teachers jealous. He held the students’ attention beautifully. I sat in awe as the class discussion around the injustices unfolded and I observed their heartfelt responses to their new knowledge. Joel skilfully wove these themes into a reflection about how they could take action and why Christians feel they want to take these issues seriously.
Good job Joel!
This of course is one example of how proud I am to work amongst dedicated volunteers and see them grow in confidence and skills. (He wasn’t doing this a year ago!).
Wherever you are at on your journey of volunteering with Step, please know that we celebrate you and the vital contributions you’ve made.
