Words into Actions

In July we presented sixth formers in Sir John Lawes school with a rare educational experience given by two asylum seekers in their school. The young men spoke about their reasons for leaving home and their ordeals as they travelled to the UK. They also elaborated on some of the challenges with accommodation and daily life with the uncertainty of whether they will be allowed to stay in our country.

The students responded with compassion and sensitivity. Their many questions were asked thoughtfully, and the atmosphere was electric as each listened with intent.

In the moments following the presentation, several of the students were moved to ask how they could help local efforts in Markyate to serve and aid Asylum seekers accommodated in the nearby large hotel?

A number of ideas were discussed and the sixth formers felt strongly that they wished to share what they had heard with the entire school and to encourage anybody who was willing to donate warm clothing which they no longer required.

In the next few weeks, the students have arranged to film the same two asylum seekers giving their presentation, and create an assembly plan to get the word out. In the days which follow the plan is to collect in clothes donated and for 4 students and 2 of their teachers to join us in a distribution of clothes to any in need of warm winter wear.

We are heart warmed by their reactions and hope they will be successful in communicating this message around the school. I look forward to updating you with our progress in due course.
