Queues on the M25 Over a Decade Ago Still Worth it Today

About twelve years ago, I remember sitting in queue after queue after queue on the M25 on a Friday evening with the Step team on our 6-7 hour journey to get to the Youthwork Conference in Eastbourne. The reason we didn’t leave earlier in the day and enjoy an afternoon by the beach was to allow Chris to have a booking meeting with Verulam School.

Yesterday was another example of why waiting in all those queues was worth it, as I organised our annual Christianity Day at Verulam – an event which was first booked all those years ago on that memorable day in November.

A team of 13 people helped the boys think about who Jesus was, explored his miracles, studied his parables and considered what loving our neighbour meant on the world stage though our exciting, if not chaotic Fairtrade game. The boys all received Bibles from Good News for Everyone (formerly The Gideons), which they used throughout the day and took home if they so wished.

After lunch, all the classes had an Alpha Taster session, with a course being arranged to be delivered in the near future, before an inter-form Kahoot quiz and final reflection.

Throughout the day, the boys were encouraged to ask questions and they didn’t disappoint. Here are some of the questions that the 11 and 12 year olds asked:

•“Why is the uncaused cause God?” (which we will explore further with them next week in lessons looking at the arguments for the existence of God)
•“What started the sin of pride in the Devil?”
•“Are the Son, Father and Holy Spirit one thing?”
•“Is life a simulation?”
•“Why was Jesus killed?”

The school shared their appreciation of the day and we look forward to journeying with this year group throughout their time at Verulam.
