Love in Action
We have the joy at Step of working across lots of different areas of the school. From RE departments, to mental health hubs and even in this case, Geography! Each year at Sir John Lawes we have the privilege of helping to run the Cultural Enrichment Day for year 7s. By this point in the year the students have already met us twice, through 'Who is Jesus' and 'Parables' lessons.
During the Cultural Enrichment Day the students get to explore 7 different countries and cultures, trying out their games, clothes, food and learning more about their culture! We have volunteers from all over the world helping make these days possible and seeing such a diverse team of people from Step and local churches coming together, is a beautiful picture of the gospel message being for ALL people.
We also saw how much this day meant to the young people, as we had students from India sharing their excitement to go to 'their' room and sharing of all the food they love to make, as well as one student seeking out Eloisa in the Brazil room to speak to her in Portuguese.
For me one of the stand out moments was right at the end of the day, as they were filling out their reflections. One student came up to me and simply asked: 'So you're from Step and you're Christians, so why do you run days like this?'
I was able to share that where we have taught about Who Jesus was and what He taught, we as Christians today get to follow in His example and be His hands and feet, and we believe in a God who loves and created all people and would want to be a part of celebrating that.
Some of the feedback from the students read:
‘I have learnt that we are all unique’
‘I have learnt I am good as I am’
‘Even though there are many cultures, we are all connected’
Sometimes we go into schools and share the gospel message, and other times we run around the school and send out whole staff emails looking for margarine, so Brigadero doesn't stick to young peoples hands. Both of these are important tools in sharing the love of God, and the care that He has for His children.
